Let me show you the Path to True Enlightenment: 
  1. Download the Descent II demo. You can press the link to just do it, or press the big arrow links to read up first.
  2. Once you have it set up, give yourself half an hour in a single player game to acclimate to the controls. I recommend using two joysticks for complete intuitive immersion. Download and set up Kali95. It's very straightforward if you have PPP internet access already set up.
  3. With nothing else running in Win95, connect to the internet, run Kali, and connect to the Kali Central server - you might have to try several times to get connected.
  4. Run the Descent II demo; try to join a multi-player game; you may have trouble finding one with the demo version - you may have to convince someone to meet you on Kali, or you may have to skip to buying the full Descent II version.
  5. Prove to yourself that it's great fun.
  6. Buy the Descent II full version(~$50) and register for Kali ($20), and have some real fun.
  7. Once you feel confident, sign up on the ladder.
